April 12- Taipei- On My Way Home & Strange Event at DaNang Airport

 Well, my 3-hour flight from DaNang to Taipei was the first of three that will get me to Anchorage.  A strange event occurred at DaNang Airport while I was standing way back in a long line of travelers, who were waiting for the check-in counter to open for my upcoming Starlux flight. Out of the blue, a man walked up and motioned for me to follow him. I didn't understand what the heck was going on. He then escorted me to the front of the line while instructing everyone to move aside to allow my passage. There I was, the first person in a line of hundreds awaiting check-in. I can only think of one reason for this occurrence. Nearby was a girl at an information stand with whom I had been discussing my humanitarian program. I also showed her the newspaper article with a photo of Col. Tha and me. She appeared very interested. Anyway, I wonder if she pulled some strings. I felt like a line jumper!

 


 On landing in Taipei, I was hoping to secure a little "transit" room at Plaza Premium Lounge. It would be close, as my flight landed at 10:35 PM and the lounge access closed at 11. But, I rushed through flight transfer/screening and made it at 10:59!  With a 22-hour layover, this basic, clean, comfortable room came in very handy. The stay includes food, drink, etc. They also offer double rooms. I chose the 12-hour stay and will check out in 45 minutes. Not having to exit the secure zone is quite an advantage.

 





 
 

The next flight is to Seattle, which will be a long one.  But Starlux provides great meals/service and the planes are massive and very comfortable.

 It was an early morning, as Khanh picked me up at 6 AM to head south to Quang Nam province. His wife, Dr. Trang, and her father, Ha, made up our group. We veered off of Highway 1 to drop Trang off at Ni Hgnia Hospital, where she was giving a lecture. Then Khanh, Ha, and I continued on course to Thua's house, which was a couple more hours of driving. Living quite remote, his place is tough to find. Thua, as you may recall, fought with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade during the war. We surprised him with our visit, as we didn't have a means of giving advance notice. Other than failing vision, Thua is in exceptional shape for his age. March 31- Surprise Encounter at Nhi Ha

After completing the mission and departing the NVA cemetery at Nhi Ha, Nhung and I had started back to Dong Ha. Then, about midway on our drive, Nhung received a call from the cemetery caretaker. She wanted to inform us that, just after we had left, an organized group had arrived from quite a distance north via bus. And they wanted to meet with me. These folks were sons and daughters of NVA troops killed at Nhi Ha, all of whom are buried at that cemetery. Of course, we turned around and headed back. As we arrived  I was surrounded by 20 men and women, all who had lost their father in battle at Nhi Ha.   Pham Hong Thinh Killed in Action May 6, 1968 They scoured over my Nhi Ha photos from May '68. 2025 Humanitarian Trip March 23

 Well, the journey begins. I'm at the gate at Anchorage Airport awaiting a flight to Seattle. It'll be a 6-hour layover before enduring a 13-hour flight to Taipei. After a 10-hour layover there, I'm off on the final leg to DaNang. Arrival is at 5:20 PM Mar 25 Vietnam time. A shuttle bus driver will try to find me outside the airport around 7 PM for transport to Hue. I have a sign made with my name on it to help him out.  Our distribution of 1,500 chickens will take place July 27, which gives me a day to rest up from the long journey. Oh, instead of providing 5 goats in the mountain village of Hong Ha, it'll be 10. Stay tuned to this blog for updates, details, and photos.
